In New World you will progress in three major ways, Core Attributes
, Weapon Mastery
, and Trade Skills. New World does not have a traditional class based system, and progression revolves around your core attributes and leveling skills and weapons individually the more you use them.
In this article we are going to be focusing on how character progression works with Trade Skills.
Trade skills are made up of 3 different non combat categories which include, gathering, refining, and crafting, and there are several skills within each category.
Let’s start by discussing gathering skills. Gathering is broken down into 4 different skill lines which include mining, skinning, logging, and harvesting. To progress, or level up a gathering skill you simply have to use that particular skill. The more you use it the better you become at performing that task.
So let’s say you want to be able to mine the best ore in the game. Then grab a pick axe and start mining every node you see and you’ll eventually be able to max out that skill line. As you progress within each skill line you will unlock the ability to gather higher tier resources at certain level markers.
It’s also important to point out that you will gain an additional perk as you progress within each gathering skill line as well, and that is the ability to track resources. This will allow you to find certain resources in the wild much easier and make you a much more efficient gatherer.
So now you have all these raw materials from gathering and it’s time to refine those materials.
There are 5 different skill lines within the refining category which are smelting, stone cutting, woodworking, tanning, and weaving.
Smelters, of course, refine ore into ingots, stone cutting is used to refine stone into blocks and cut gemstones into gems in order to socket them into gear, woodworkers cut wood into lumber, tanners refine hide into leather, and weavers turn fiber into usable cloth.
In order to level up each skill line you simply have to refine more materials.
As you level up in a particular skill you will unlock the ability to refine higher quality resources which are in turn used to craft higher quality gear. You also become much more resource efficient as higher level refiners have a chance to gain extra refined resources while they refine.
So now you have gathered your raw materials, refined those materials into usable resources, and now it’s time to use those resources to craft.
There are seven different crafting skills in New World including weaponsmithing, armoring, jewelcrafting, engineering, arncana, cooking, and furnishing.
Just like with gathering and refining the more you craft within a particular skill line the higher you will progress within that particular line. So, if you want to make the best weapons in the game you would just acquire the needed materials and craft as many weapons as possible in order to level up your weaponsmithing skill.
Leveling a crafting skill will unlock more recipes and allow you to craft higher tier items. The tier of items range from tier 1 being the lowest to tier 5 being the highest.
So, in a nutshell the more you perform a specific task within a specific skill line the further you will progress within that skill.
It’s also very important to note that your character is not capped as to how many skills you can master. So, if enough time is invested you could essentially max out every trade skill within the game.
